Interview by Mick Devine

Carlisle Health, a growing radiology group operating across Queensland and New South Wales, has seen rapid expansion—from two sites to 23. With that growth came complexity, especially in financial reporting. I sat down with Tom Young, General Manager of Acquisitions and Finance, and Deep Saini, Financial Controller, to talk about how Calxa helped simplify and scale the Carlisle Health reporting processes.

Let’s start with a quick intro. Who are you and what does Carlisle Health do?

Tom: I’m Tom Young, General Manager of Acquisitions and Finance at Carlisle Health. We’re a radiology business operating across the eastern seaboard—Queensland and NSW. We’ve grown primarily through acquisitions.

Deep: And I’m Deep Saini, Financial Controller. Carlisle is a group of radiology businesses, and we manage financial operations across all our sites.

What problem were you trying to solve when you brought in Calxa?

Tom: Initially, we used Xero and needed a tool for consolidated reporting. As we grew, we moved to NetSuite, but found its reporting capabilities lacking—especially for board-level and operational decision-making. Calxa filled that gap by presenting data in a usable, consistent format across all our businesses.

What does Calxa offer that NetSuite reports don’t?

Tom: NetSuite’s native reports are basic—no formatting, no branding, and no easy way to consolidate across multiple entities. We’d have to run 10 separate reports and manually stitch them together. With Calxa, once we configured the reports the way we wanted, it became a one-click process every month.

Deep: It’s also much more user-friendly. The ability to customise reports and present them in a board-ready format is a huge plus. It saves us time and reduces complexity.

How does Calxa help you achieve your business goals?

Tom: It gives us timely, accurate financial reporting. If someone asks for a different view of the data, we can generate it instantly. That responsiveness is critical for a fast-growing business like ours.

Deep: Exactly. It allows us to build, bundle, and analyse reports quickly. We can answer questions on the spot without digging through datasets.

Can you quantify the benefits?

Tom: Before Calxa, producing consolidated reports could take half a day. Now it’s a click of a button. That’s a massive time saving for our team.

Deep: And as we grow, that efficiency becomes even more important. Calxa scales with us.

What’s the biggest advantage of using Calxa?

Tom: Honestly? The help desk. It’s Australian-based, fast, and incredibly knowledgeable. I’ve been using Calxa for about seven years and never had a question they couldn’t answer—even for complex, custom needs.

Deep: Their eagerness to help is unmatched. No issue is too small or too complex—they always find a solution.

Have you discovered any unexpected benefits?

Tom: We originally saw Calxa as just a reporting tool. But it’s also great for planning and analysis. We can export data in a usable format for deeper insights—like site performance or CapEx planning.

Deep: It’s helped us combine qualitative and quantitative data in ways we didn’t anticipate when we first started using it.

What advice would you give to other NetSuite users?

Tom: Be careful when scoping your reporting solution. Just because a system can show a number doesn’t mean it presents it in a usable way. Calxa makes reporting efficient and insightful. We looked at other NetSuite-recommended tools, but none matched Calxa’s usability.

Deep: Do your due diligence. Calxa offers enterprise-level functionality without the heavy investment of time and resources that other platforms demand.

What’s one thing we could do better?

Tom: We don’t use Calxa for budgeting because our business is driven by complex metrics like average fees and activity-based drivers. We build our budgets in Excel for that reason. If Calxa could handle more dynamic, driver-based budgeting, that would be a game-changer.

Also, the report designer is powerful but intimidating. More intuitive training or templates could help users unlock its full potential.
