North Queensland IT company Calxa has ensured that 100% of its indigenous customers have lodged their annual reports on time, avoiding a $13,750 penalty.
The customers, many of them multi-million dollar operations, have used Calxa budgeting and cashflow forecasting software to ensure good governance and financial compliance.
Recently, the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations (ORIC) expressed its concern that only 83% of corporations have been able to comply with the CATSI Act (2006), submitting their annual reports by the required deadline.
Calxa CEO Mick Devine says that many of his indigenous customers had complex reporting requirements both for internal boards and also for grant acquittals to various funding bodies.
“The ability to quickly and accurately provide financial reports for board review each month removes a compliance burden and frees them to look after core business,” Mr Devine said.
Leigh Kariko, Operations Manager of Jawoyn Association Aboriginal Corporation in Katherine, NT, believes that Calxa offers solutions to many of the challenges that Not-For-Profit organisations face.
“Calxa has saved my finance staff so much time with regards to creating budgets and reports. The deadlines from funding organisations or external authorities such as ORIC and our auditors are no longer quite so daunting. Previously all budgets were kept on a spreadsheet and to create any kind of budget report we needed to export an MYOB report to Excel and create the report manually, which was both time consuming and prone to error”, says Mr Kariko
Jawoyn has recently committed to using Calxa as its budgeting tool for the next five years. “The end result is visually appealing and easy to understand for non-accountants and program managers. Calxa displays an entire program’s budget in a snapshot very nicely.”
This sentiment is echoed by other corporations: “Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation has run a successful operation in Maningrida, Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory for over 38 years and we have great plans for the future. We have used Calxa to provide the Board with relevant financial information much faster than previous methods used. This frees up my and their time to focus on new projects.” says Chief Financial Officer Chandra Seneviratne
